Physical Education and Health

Health and physical education are integral components of the OLVCS educational program. Physical activity and exercise are vital to every child’s development. According to the US Centers for Disease Control, regular physical activity in childhood and adolescence improves strength and endurance, helps build healthy bones and muscles, helps control weight, reduces anxiety and stress, increases self-esteem, and may improve blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Studies show that a skillful mover is more likely to participate in physical activity throughout his/her lifetime, and physically active students have an increased chance of achieving to their highest academic potential.
OLVCS students in all grades have one physical education class per week. Further, an organized series of interactive health classes are taught to all OLVCS students. The course material and required activities vary by grade-level.
The OLVCS program prepares students to understand, apply and to build physical activity skills and movement concepts for use in future grade levels. Further, students learn about and practice good Christian sportsmanship and health behaviors known to promote good health and overall fitness. The OLVCS Physical Education and Health curriculae are guided by the standards set by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
