Flexible Instruction Days

A Flexible Instruction Day is an instruction format that is used for situations when there is advance notice that school will not be in session due to severe weather, law emergency, damage to the school building, or another situation preventing use of the school building for a short period of time.

How are parents/guardians notified about a Flexible Instruction Day (FID)?

  • OLVCS parents/guardians receive notification of an FID via text/email/phone call from the School Messenger system, as with all school closures.

How is work be assigned for FID?

  • If an FID is anticipated for the next school day, e.g. severe weather is forecasted, students are given information about FID assignments by their teacher during the school day; materials needed for FID are sent home; and assignments for the FID are posted on Schoology.
  • In addition to Schoology, Middle School students may be given information about assignments via email.
  • In the event that an FID is implemented on the day of school closure, teachers prepare assignments via Schoology or email by 8:00AM. Assignments and activities provided on these days utilize materials that students can reasonably be expected to have access to at home.

What is expected of students?

  • Flexible Instruction Days are NOT remote instruction and are asynchronous, so work may be done at the student's own pace on the day that school is not in session.
  • FID assignments MUST be turned in as instructed by the student's teacher(s) within two days of your student returning to school.
  • If a student does not turn in the work by the due date, he/she will be marked absent for the FID and will not receive credit for assignments.

How can we get help with assignments during an FID?

  • Teachers have two office hour periods during the FID school day: 9:00AM-10:00AM and 1:00PM-2:00PM. Teachers are available via Zoom and email during these office hours.
