    Mathematics

The Our Lady of Victory Catholic School faculty and administration firmly believe that mastery of mathematic facts and skills are essential for success in school and life, in general.  OLVCS teachers use a combination of traditional instructional methods and innovative approaches to help each OLVCS student master mathematical concepts and their applications. The OLVCS Mathematics curriculum meets the standards set by the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown Office of Education, which models its learning outcomes after the standards set by the PA Department of Education.

In general, math topics covered in the OLVCS curriculum include, but not limited to:

    • Grades K - 2: Knowledge of numbers, shapes and patterns, length and weight, graphs, calendar, time and money

    • Grades 3 - 5: Concepts, skills, and problem solving related to multiplication and division of whole numbers and fractions

    • Grade 6: Ratios and proportional relationships, and early algebraic expressions and equation

    • Grade 7: Ratios and proportional relationships, and arithmetic of rational numbers (Pre-Algebra)

    • Grade 8: Linear algebra and linear functions (Algebra I)

Geometry is offered for middle school students with advanced math aptitude and who have completed the prerequisites.  Approval of the middle school math teacher is required.

The mathematics series adopted at the elementary level is called Math in Focus.  This math series provides an authentic Singapore math curriculum, highlighting problem solving as the focus of mathematical learning. It teaches concepts using a concrete-pictorial-abstract learning progression to anchor learning in real-world and hands-on experiences. The program challenges students to improve all aspects of their mathematics abilities, including computation skills.

The mathematics series use at the middle school level is called Glenco Math (McGraw-Hill).  This rigorous series emphasizes conceptual understanding, application, and procedural skill and fluency of middle school-level mathematics.

OLVCS students strengthen their foundational mathematics skills through regular use of a web-based program, iXL Math. This program  targets math at the elementary and middle school level while providing students with personalized feedback to enhance conceptual understanding.

All interested Our Lady of Victory Catholic School students in grades 3 through Middle School may join the OLVCS Math Team and compete in the Catholic Math League.  This is a national math competition that includes hundreds of Catholic schools throughout the country.
